“Qin” (pronounced as “chin”) is the name of the first dynasty in imperial China, an era when the famous Terracotta Army was built circa 221 BC. Today, “Qin” is also the abbreviation of Shaanxi Province, located in the heart of northwestern China, famous for its rich culinary heritage.
Zooming in, Qin-Chilli grows in Baoji, Shaanxi, a historical city bearing the nickname “Treasured Land in the West” because of its wide variety of agricultural produce and harvests. The History
The first historical record of Qin-Chilli is found in the History of Baoji, where it mentions that locals started growing Qin-Chilli in the 17th century. Even today, every March, local farmers begin preparing the buds of Qin-Chilli, which takes a total of seven months of hard work to harvest in October. Consequently, the production volume is very limited.
How Does Qin-Chilli Look and Taste?
Qin-Chilli is very long and evenly slim. The length of a Qin-Chilli can reach up to 22.9 cm (species Baoji Chilli #6). Locals love calling it “string chillis” to show its slimness, but also call it “the King of Chillis” due to its nutritious values. The Qin-Chilli is also very meaty, with an extraordinarily thick skin and bright red colour. It offers a perfect balance of heat, aroma and fruitiness.
